Maritza Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s national champion for the sixth time in a row! Unlike the previous five times, this title was not won in the final playoff of the National Volleyball League, but still battled out and well deserved on the court.
As expected, with Tuesday’s decision of the national federation, the NVL season is officially over and the current standings, in which the Yellow-and-Blues lead emphatically on a 19-0 win-loss record, having won 57 of the 58 sets played, were declared as final. Thus, Maritza’s sixth consecutive title, which was hardly ever in anyone’s doubt, is now a reality.
The remaining two regular season matches, which coach Ivan Petkov’s girls were scheduled to play, as well as all the playoffs are definitively cancelled in connection with the coronavirus pandemic state of emergency declared in Bulgaria on March 13.
Along with the NVL gold medals, Maritza earns the right to represent Bulgaria in Europe’s top-level club competition, the CEV Champions League, for the fifth time in a row and according to the country’s ranking will once again join the continental race directly from the pool stage.
The silver medals and a spot in the third-tier CEV Challenge Cup tournament go to Levski Sofia. CSKA Sofia completes the podium with bronze.
